bio

Maira Shimada is a Frankfurt-born Japanese-Australian artist based in Eora/Sydney on unceded Gadigal land. Raised amongst classical-contemporary musicians and dancers, her artistic intent is rooted in a restless magnetism for music, theatre and performance. Everything is an experiment. Maira holds up mirrors and bounces light at odd angles. Simultaneously fascinated by and rejective of technological advancement, she has either utilised or abandoned technology to access other worlds and orient herself within nature.

Personal memory loiters in flux with contemporary existence. Translating between languages and mediums, she is interested in what's hidden, what's retained, and what's butchered into new poetic direction. Her chosen materials of textile, ink, sound, video, installation, and various untraditional materials teeter around fragility, degradation, and becoming unrecognisable.

Maira graduated with a Bachelor of Natural History Illustration and Faculty Medal Award from the University of Newcastle in 2020.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which I live and work, the Darug, Gundungurra and Eora Nations. I extend my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise their continuing connections to the land, waters, and cultures. Sovereignty was never ceded. This was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Horseshoe, AIRspace Projects
Harrison Rae + Maira Shimada
“Horseshoe presents work by Harrison Rae and Maira Shimada that reflect on collapse as a destructive and generative force. Through archival reproduction and acts of deconstruction, their practices pull intimacies out of the mundane and structurally unsound.”

Green replica of my imagination / genkan (2025)
Crayon frottage on rice paper, tape. 260x165 cm.
Originally exhibited in Tokyo at HoiPoi Kōenji for “Circling Threads”, August 2025.

This is a crayon imprint on rice paper of my grandmother’s genkan (entranceway) in west Tokyo. A passage my family has walked through for 60 years. These are our shoes and umbrellas. It is scheduled for demolition by local council, some day in the next years. I keep picturing the demolition ball rocking in the sky and smashing it to a million pieces of 1960s concrete.

I have a bad memory; I mean, I think my memories go to live in the same place as my imagination (for better or for worse). Making an imprint with paper and crayon is the most intimate replica I can get of things. The paper is physically intimate with the place/object, and takes on its textures. We retain shapes, but lose colour and images – for example, a photograph when imprinted becomes nothing more than a rectangle. 3D becomes 2D.

The first phase of exhibiting this work happened in Tokyo - it was installed on the floor of the gallery at its entrance, and I invited attendees to use it like a real genkan; please take off your shoes here to enter the gallery. In Japanese culture, stepping on something is a really degrading thing to do, a kind of compulsion that’s probably leftover from feudal times. So stepping on the work was very intimate – one is confronted, one wants to be careful, the paper is fragile and will tear, the crayon will warp. This was the artwork’s natural devolution as it took on the physical memory of their shoes and feet.
By the time I brought the work to Eora it was pretty fragile, full of long tears with a sheen of dirt in the pattern of the tatami floor of the original gallery. This time we installed it floating on the wall. It was extremely structurully unsound, the damage all there to sniff and inspect, and that waxy crayon stench still hanging around.

	Some kind of calendar (2025)
Ink on twelve red napkins. 33x33cm each.

Earlier on Harry and I were drawn to Hito Steyerl’s work ‘November’ (2004) which paints the time following a period of revolution. Steyerl says, ‘If October is the hour of revolution, November is the time of common sense afterward, though it is also the time of madness’. We imagined September to symbolise the period prior to the October hour. Although this study eventually abstracted into the exhibition theme around ‘collapse’, the sentiment remained undercurrent to our work. We talked and worked inspired and in solidarity with the greatest political upheavals of our own lifetimes.

12 words one for each month. I play a game of making as many words as possible from each word, then making a poem from these anagrammatic words. Sometimes I need to misspell and abbreviate to make do with what letters I’ve got. Sometimes they get a sort of beat to them from all the chopping. Meanwhile the world around is a daily dissolution of humanity. In some people, and in me, there’s a sort of painful and gratifying self-governance that’s pushed out like a baby being born. How do we raise this baby? Who are its parents?

There’s a form of divination in Chinese calligraphy that as a pastime I’ve played around with. All kanji are made of smaller kanji called ‘radicals’, which are the fundamental root characters. For example, the kanji for ‘island’ is made of the radicals ‘mountain’ and ‘bird’, alluding to the mountain being the place a bird will fly over and take rest on. I used to privately do divination about people I met, would take apart their names and see what meaning could be made. The napkin poems developed from this habit of taking words apart, only this time with the latin alphabet.

Napkins are flimsy, flammable, flirt with the wind. We eat off them, we wipe our mouths and tears with them.

I ended with ‘disambiguation’, a word I’ve never used, because the wikipedia page for ‘September’ is titled ‘September (disambiguation)’. It weirdly spoke to my feelings around the napkin poems wombing the biomorphic emotion of dystopia that edges into each waking and sleeping hour of the 21st century.

In September 2024, Maira travelled to Mongolia to be the first international artist-in-residence at Mongolian Artist Residency Studios (MARS), facilitated by Mongolian artist Ganbold Lundaa (aka Gawaa) in association with Arts Council of Mongolia. Beginning in a brief window of autumn and ending in the first falls of snow, Maira spent 5 weeks exploring the rural locale on foot and horseback, meeting Mongolian and international artists, and visiting studios and galleries in Ulaanbaatar. This is a small selection of photographs.

New Skin for Old Song, Tiles Gallery Lewisham
Curated by Kata Szász-Komlós
“New Skin for Old Song presents 10 artists as conduits towards the transformation of a seemingly discarded or unused object. We seek no answers, only attempts towards articulating our innate interconnectedness, to ask the question; What can a world look like if we honour the inherent potential, the innate story of everything we are in relation with?
To distill this concept into its most potent form we can consider this as a kind of modern Animism; a belief that everything that exists in this world, lives and permits its own agence, that each ‘thing’ has and continues to have a story that permeates across relational fields. ...Tiles used to be an old butcher shop, a history that the gallery team chose not to efface with the introduction of a new storyline. This history lives on in a literal sense, across the walls and throughout the space but transforms within the hands of every artist whose works have been drilled into the tiles, into the space. Every green plug is another story, told within a larger one, of a community of artists.Imagining a living world requires us to come to terms with the violence and dominion over the sacred and also, all that we have lost. A courageous creativity and spiritual praxis is being asked of us, as we witness arts institutions play word bingo, repeating empty phrases like trapped parrots in a white cage, afraid and unwilling to meet the legacy of thousands of years of creative being.
This exhibition is curated with intention and hope. This exhibition and all the participating artists support and are in solidarity with a Free Palestine, with dismantling colonial borders across the globe, emergent economic systems and First Nations reparations, land back and justice.”

	The Butterfly Chair (2024)
Roadside chair, clay, deconstructed broom
I’ve got butterflies on my mind
I’ve been waiting a long long time
— featuring butterflies, crabs, a horse centipede, and a crown — materials — a roadside chair built entirely from wood (no nails or screws), clay, and a deconstructed broom.
The Butterfly Chair says there is everything and nothing to be said. Who is ‘I’ who sits in it so steadily? Why does ‘I’ wear a crown? What is ‘I’ waiting for?

Chairs are for sitting, watching, waiting. Brooms are for sweeping. Four figures ride a many-legged horse with their arms raised as if in surrender, or to fight, or perhaps they are having a nice time. Who knows which. The horse strains forward, or perhaps it is leaping with excitement. Who knows which. I made it from a place I find difficult to articulate.

It began as a feeling.

Crowns could be age, importance, nobility, power, wisdom. Butterflies could be beauty, life, hope, freedom, absentmindedness, a daydream. The crab could be hunger, playfulness, greed, a fighter, a defender, a dancer. As if the sun is contained in a butterfly’s wing, the crab is moved by its splendour and goes to touch it – or to take it. It is round and hot as a lump of coal, or a grenade. I thought I didn’t know the line between violence and games could grow so thin.

The Butterfly Chair is still. But it is in the way! By the roadside, in the front yard, in the middle of the room, at the top of the hill, at the train station, inside the train, it is in the way!
‘I’ sits and waits, and history passes through ‘I’s body as if between seat and crown there were nothing but air. This is the kind of dust that brooms sweep away.
There are stories about butterflies, and about crabs. To my knowledge there are no stories about horse centipedes, but there are plenty about figures with their arms raised.
‘I’ is waiting for nothing and for something. For the fish to swim into the net, for the rains to come, for the clouds to part, for the people to come home, for home to near, for fire to grow hotter. ‘I’ is waiting for the crab to tell them why it reaches for the butterfly wing.
‘I’ is waiting to feel the fate of the figures with their arms raised. ‘I’ is waiting for new history to pass through ‘I’s body as if between seat and crown there were a human being.
From my chair I am looking out and watching, waitingWherever I take my chairI sit upon itI am steady on my chairSteady from my years of waiting

This is what the stick heard (2024)
Audio, cassette tape + player, stick

Sound is strange. Sound seems non-physical but is physical. A vibration that moves through a medium such as air, liquid, or solid. Sound travels, and can occupy, or be unnoticed. Sound can exist in many layers, can leave and return, disperse into open space, remain unanswered. I like the idea of oral traditions being momentarily physical. The vibrations of speech, song and music make physical impressions on whatever is around them as they make contact. People and places are embossed by sound.

What is a discarded sound?
sound that is not made to be listened to; accidental sounds, background sounds.
sound that is no longer needed; undesirable sounds.
sound that is naturally or forcibly never repeated again; songs, languages and dialects, accents changed or unspoken, words lost.
I have lived in 13 houses on 12 streets. Each had its own soundscape that over time would gradually naturalise. One of the houses was directly beside the end of a coal train line that runs from Wonnarua Country/Hunter Valley and ends at Port Waratah, Muloobinba/Newcastle. Night and day, trains over 1km in length loaded with coal would screech slowly to a halt outside my room. The din was incredible. But after many sleepless nights, even this noise began to fade, until, without noticing, I forgot it ever existed.
As children, we’d drag sticks behind us as we ran into the bush to play. The sticks made long curving lines in the dirt. If we came across someone else’s stick-trail, we’d wonder if it was made by a stick or a snake.
I dragged this stick from Eora/Sydney all the way back to that old house in Muloobinba/Newcastle, to hear the coal trains halt.
This is what the stick heard.

Running into the arms of wheatfields, I borrow a childhood of which I have no memory (solo exhibition)

A solo exhibition held at The Kitchen Gallery in Sydney, Running into the arms of wheatfields, I borrow a childhood of which I have no memory presented video, installation, and textile works by Maira Shimada in November 2023. Salvaged from an enormous backlog documenting her visits to her grandparents in Tokyo, it is a hard-born yet willow-edged imagining of a world absent of time.On opening night, viewings of Terebi Ongaku and Lilac were staged at 30-minute intervals in cinema fashion. Due to technical difficulties, two persons were required to start the cycle on separate channels, calling ‘3! 2! 1!’ from separate rooms to sync them correctly. Queuing attendees were herded in with the door closed behind them, and herded out upon conclusion. Terebi Ongaku was screened first as a projection, followed by Lilac on the CRT TV. Originally made as separate video works, the effect of screening them together led the artist to regard them as one single artwork, Lilac acting as an epilogue to Terebi Ongaku.

Artist’s Note
“Following the rapid decline of my grandfather’s health and my inability to be with him during his death, these works explored a state of displacement that ventured beyond the geographical and cultural, as memory ‘fails to arrive at its destination of origin’. This exhibition came from an experimental and intuitive devotion to video and sound as a method of ‘dreaming’, two media which I explored in my practice for the first time.

Music and sound to me represent some of the earliest modes of expression and communication, having unfastened themselves from the visual and physical into something irrepressibly alive. Our childhood house chattered in German, Japanese and English, the Polish and Nepalese of our nannies, and the frequent practising of musical instruments. Nobody recalls what language my first words were in, or what language my brain began developing as its mothertongue. In a world of inconsistency, I imagine that childhood is full of these abstract displacements; language displaced by music, language displaced by migration, the audio of a visual memory displaced by a different audio or by silence, all swapping and playing like checker pieces.

I like to imagine the television as an organic object and vessel for image and sound, much like a person. Both video/audio works ‘Terebi Ongaku’ and ‘Lilac’ played on the idea of the ‘television’ as a vessel by which we receive and communicate information of various levels of importance. I had spent a great deal of time with my grandparents simply watching news broadcasts and entertainment programs on Japanese television. I had also watched my grandfather’s funeral through a computer screen on the other side of the world, from cleaning and dressing his deceased body to placing him in a casket under a mountain of flowers. ‘Terebi Ongaku’ featured audio recordings of my grandfather speaking of his own grandmother’s death, as well as recordings of computer-generated online translators ‘reciting’ extracts from my journal in robotic and not entirely accurate Japanese.
Set against visual footage collected during my time in Japan, it mimicked the constant ambience of the Japanese television broadcasters talking in the background of my grandparent’s home, and usurped these materials’ capacity to behave as clear memories.

For ‘Terebi Ongaku’ I also recorded the traditional tone clusters of Gagaku music on a Casio synthesiser. My grandfather was trained as a Gagaku musician and dancer at the Imperial Palace in his youth, before making a career as a violist. The sound of the Casio ‘dreaming’ the tone clusters traditionally played by a Japanese ‘sho’ instrument was another abstract displacement of a memory. The act of recollecting was ‘refracted’ in a sense by a series of ‘lenses’ (the television, the video camera, the computer-voice, the Casio), which mirrored my real experience of remembering, whether it be my or somebody else’s recollection. As a footnote, ‘Yasujiro Ozu’s Headstone’ is a crayon rubbing of the director Yasujiro Ozu’s actual headstone, located in Kamakura. My side of the family was somewhat banished from our family grave and we do not have anywhere to put my grandfather’s bones, or to honour ancestors in the usual ceremonial way. Since I was forbidden from visiting or even knowing the whereabouts of the family gravesite, it’s become a habit to visit those of others. My mother once said to me that ‘because of the changes that came from war and modernisation, we don’t have any roots anywhere’. Like the grains of rice forming the physical bed for ‘Lilac’, other odd things gain interest to me.”

documentation for Moon Rabbit Rising
at The Belvoir St Theatre
Moon Rabbit Rising was devised in June 2022 and ran a two-week season. Nicole Pingon who was directing the production invited me to attend the rehearsals. A selection of the following documentation was exhibited at The Belvoir St Theatre for the duration of the production season.

“In times past, there were ten suns in the sky. Each sun would take their turn to rise and set, until one day all ten suns leapt out together and ran wild. In-between suns, moons, heaven and earth lives the story of 后羿 (Hou Yi) and 嫦娥 (Chang’e); two dreamers connected through time, and bound to our present. A story retold, and reimagined for millennia.” devised by the company directed by Nicole Pingon produced by Little Eggs Collective

Gathering Geographies Darren Knight Gallery
Curated by Mara Schwerdtfeger
“An exhibition questioning how the Earth's movements shape how we gather, act, and move through space.”

In this series of works the process of preparing bread is world-building, and an emulation of earth's natural processes. I could talk about how we look at a field of wheat and see the words 'wheat, flour, bread'. What we don't see is that these words are actually round - like spheres - each another 'earth' containing, with implications and the ability to respond. Isn't earth built of responses? I create an environment, specific, in order for the sour to respond in a way that ultimately I can only hope to design. I think a lot about water (life's enabling), and warm versus cool (wherever be the sun), and the presence of salt (like the sea), and I begin to move in tandem with this herd of organisms.

Another question was, where are the gods and spirits? Bread coming from wheat, a crop, has a strong spiritual association to any people with agricultural traditions; think of harvest, drought, flood, and the forces behind them. At practise recently for Onikenbai/鬼剣舞 (a dance, from Iwate 岩崎、Kitakami 北上), someone pointed out that perhaps more than skywards, our/my spirits are earth and water bound; they reside in the ground, that region beyond our physically "horizontal existence". That is with the roots, the nutrient material, where the water goes, and we coat the surface of their world.

2022Kurosawa Daydream was released as a noise EP in 2021 by friend and collaborator Mitchell Elliott. Elliott describes it as a series of attempts to expand his experience of watching the 1990 magical realist film ‘Dreams’ by Akira Kurosawa into his own multiverse. He daydreamed a story for my own vocal melody based on the Mt Fuji in Red and The Weeping Demon sections, the final song ‘Mountain Climbing’ pursuing a further abstraction into this dream place.
In March 2022 Elliott performed Kurosawa Daydream as a live set for the Newcastle Fringe Festival at The Royal Exchange, for which I filmed and edited together a video piece. It was collated during a period of change, causing the video-making to become a constant refuge I inhabited. Each day and into the night I listened to erratic frequencies until eventually, bizarrely, the noise became a disturbance I was able to recognise as soothing. It came as a surprise to me then to hear that audience members were frozen in their seats with fright during the performances. I recall we celebrated the fact afterwards in a Thai restaurant.
